Not exactly a Carpet of moths at Redlands

The event last night was at Redlands Wood, in the shadow of Leith Hill near Dorking. It had been yet another disappointing day in terms of temperatures, but it was forecast to cloud over. Did it? Of course not! Temps were down to 12 degrees when we packed up at 12:30. As a result, numbers were pretty poor, although better than I expected. Luckily, we did get one or two nice things, including a new species to me. It was a Twin-spot Carpet that was one of the first moths to appear, and we got another 4 or so by the nights end. Nice to see my second Ghost Moth and Bordered White also.

underwings arrive

I had a short session trapping in my garden on 24th where I was again hampered by hornets buzzing round the trap. In the end, I decided that I would just cover the trap and deal with it in the morning. So, not surprisingly, I didn't have a large catch. However there were some 'new for year's.

Hectic week

I had a very busy trapping session overnight on Tuesday (13th) with c70 species in the trap, including three completely new to me: scallop shell, lesser-spotted pinion and dot moth. I also had about 20 year ticks. It took me ages to ID and, where appropriate, photograph everything.
This evening I netted another new moth in the garden, large emerald.
I am also uploading a picture of one of the egg trays to give an idea of what they looked like - this was taken about three hours after dawn when quite a few moths had already flown away.

Lobes of moths at the marshland

The destination for mothing last night was the water meadows of Godalming - the Lammas Lands. Yet again, conditions were warm, but not at all cloudy, and we got good numbers, which included the hoped for wetland species. In fact in amongst the 53 macro species, all four lifers were moths of wet habitats. The new ones were Dingy Shears, Double Lobed, Lesser Cream Wave, and Large Twin-spot Carpet. Also yet another Kent Black Arches, but this time much more surprising (habitat wrong!).

The Suspects get off (Wain)scot free at Horsell

Even a late night visit from the rozzers wondering what we were up to, failed to put a downer on a marvelous evening at Horsell Common near Woking. I don't blame them for being suspicious about five shapes leaning over three lights in the woodland. Maybe they thought War of the Worlds was coming to life (the book was set there)!
.
Anyway, to the moths. Even though it was clear and cold, there was a steady procession of species, that included five brand news ones to me, and final total of 57 macros. The best ones being Great Oak Beauty, Suspected, and Striped Wainscot.
