Pewley - the Centre of activity

The last session at Pewley Downs this year happened last night, and conditions were pretty good. Individual numbers were pretty impressive in three traps, with Square-spot Rustic making up the bulk of the moths. Feathered Gothic was also numerous with 20 in my trap alone. Nothing that unusual, but it was nice to get an Orange Swift, and a Centre-barred Sallow. And, it wouldn't be a trip to Pewley without a Lace Border (a small individual of the second generation).

Norbury the Centre of moth activity

On the 28th August, I went to Norbury Park near Dorking to spend an evening on the meadows there. Although conditions were again fairly cold, we got a decent haul, that included a new species. In the end we got at least 12 Centre-barred Sallows. We also managed a couple of Hedge Rustics, which are apparently now a BAP species (forgotten what that stands for, but it means the species is in deep decline).

I am now all up to date, but I am still without the internet at home, so I may well have to catch up again in the future (although with the weather as it is at the moment, it may not be that bad (I have not trapped in the garden since the 21st because of that).

29th August- NE Surrey

The weather at night recently has been pretty bad, and when it hasn't been raining, it's been absolutely freezing with no cloud cover. As a result I haven't dared put the trap out in the gaden, but being so desperate for year ticks, I had no choice but to put it out last night and see if I could get anything.

To be honest, it was the best turnout the garden has seen this August, with around 20 moths of 6 species seen by 1am.

These included 2 year ticks...
